Synopsis
Kenya, renowned for its safaris and huge animal reserves, is less well-known for its coastline. The Swahili Coast, rich in marine life, offers endless possibilities for adventure. Our story begins on Pate Island, where the Bajuni people take us on a traditional dhow to fish with a “juya” and dive for “sea cucumbers”. We then move on to NGomeni to meet the mangrove crab fishers and finally to Malindi, Watamu and Kilifi, three popular deep-sea fishing sites. Fishing on the Swahili Coast, in the traditional style or for sport, by sail or motorboat, with a line or a net, is a never-ending revelation. The Kenyan waters abound with large marlins, sailfish and sharks and the resulting combat between man and beast is enthralling. However, the resources are not inexhaustible and the risks of overfishing are beginning to show.
