Synopsis

Over one million people are in prison in Africa. 99% of them cannot afford a lawyer. Without legal assistance, prisoners languish in prison awaiting trial or receive long sentences resulting in severely overpopulated prisons across the continent. Freedom inside the Walls, which was shot in Benin, Kenya and Malawi, throws a harsh light on African prison conditions. The film analyzes the problems for poor people to access their rights when they are in conflict with the law. Since May 2000, paralegals working for the criminal justice administration in Malawi are trying to find clear solutions to the blockages in the system. This initiative has inspired similar programs in four other countries: Benin, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The film studies the paralegals' work in Malawi, Benin and Kenya.
