Synopsis
The guiding spirit behind this film is to suggest to contemporary composers that they present their work, their careers and their inspirational world "in the mirror" of a musician from the past to whom they feel close. This documentary illuminates the bonds that link a familiar musical repertory and the creative act today. Thierry Escaich is a composer and principal organist at the Saint-Etienne du Mont church in Paris. As a remarkable improviser, he plays his own compositions on the organ as well as those from the classical repertory, in particular the works of Bach. He also teaches the Art of the Fugue and improvisation to his students at the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique. Composing, improvising, teaching and presenting the liturgy all bring him closer to J. S. Bach’s music of three centuries ago.
